The sky was a pleasant shade of blue as the Uncle Sam’s Tour Boat scooted across the channel near the Canadian-American border. The St. Lawrence Seaway alongside Alexandria Bay was dotted with islands as far as the eye could see. A few were large, but most were modest in size and strikingly beautiful as springtime was well under way.

Phillip was pleased to hear Leah laugh at the tour guide’s announcement of the smallest of the islands that barely held enough earth around it to support a tree. He was certain the day would be profitable, if for no other reason than to distract her mind from the complexities of her life.

He smiled at her expression when she took in the first glimpse of the turn-of-the-century castle.

The guide gave a brief history of the extravagant structure and urged those who were stopping for the castle tour to make their exit. Phillip led her through the crowd to exit the double-decker boat.

“Breathtaking, isn’t it?” Phillip slipped their ticket stubs into the pocket of his trousers as they walked toward the gate. They strolled down the walk that wound around toward the main entrance. Flowers bloomed inside stone borders that were arranged in the shape of a heart on the sloped grounds.

“This is amazing.” Leah exclaimed, absorbing the beauty around her.

“The castle was modeled after a medieval sixteenth-century Rhineland Castle. The exterior walls are layers of hand-picked stones. Imagine all the building materials that were shipped here.”

“What an expense that must’ve been. I’d never even heard of this place before.”

“Shall I pull out my handy-dandy smelling salts?” he teased.

“Might not be a bad idea,” she laughed.

“I reacted the same way the first time I came here. It still amazes me.”

“Amazing.”

“This place is constantly changing as the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority continues the multi-million-dollar renovation project. Call me a romantic, but I never get tired of it,” Phillip admitted as they walked up the steps to the entrance of the castle. “This is a self-guided tour, so I will be your official guide at no extra charge.”

“Wow. This is like stepping back in time into a fairytale dream,” Leah announced as she scanned her surroundings.

“This ground floor interior is the only floor that was nearly complete before the project came to an abrupt halt. Check out the height of the ceilings. The stone pillars were hand carved in the replica of Mr. Boldt’s wife. Notice the intricate rose castings that border the room.”

“He spared no expense.”

“Very true.” When a man loved a woman, wasn’t that the case? Phillip forced his eyes and thoughts back to the flier in front of him. “There are one hundred and twenty rooms in the main castle.” He held the brochure between them, showing her the layout of the complex that stood nearly six stories tall at some points. “The swimming pool is in the basement, surrounded by a medieval maze of sorts. It’s easy to get lost down there. It’s pretty cool. We can check that out in the end.
